Walkway blocked as 'large narrowboat' catches fire on canal

Fire crews are tending to a large blaze involving a narrowboat sitting on the Staffordshire canal system.

Fire crews are dealing with the narrowboat blaze

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has closed pathways and advised walkers to "avoid the location" after the large craft was found ablaze on the Trent & Mersey Canal in Armitage.

In a Twitter post, the fire service asked residents to "please avoid the location to allow our crews to deal with the incident".

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service sadi: "We were called to the scene of the fire at around 1.50pm today to reports of narrowboat on fire on the canal system.

"They are using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze."

The incident is still ongoing.
