Pub takes action after man bitten in dog fight
A pub has said it will now force customers to put dogs on leads after one of its customers was attacked.
A drinker at the Boat Inn in Penkridge was bitten on the leg as he attempted to come to the aid of his pet as it fought with a second dog.
The incident was reported to the police and management said they would now make sure all dogs were kept on leads.
The man was hurt when he attempted to get in between the two dogs at the popular village pub.
He was left with a puncture wound to his thigh but was not thought to have been badly injured.
Customers were left shocked by the attack at the Boat last Wednesday, which happened near the benches on the car park.
The incident began when two dogs, said to be an Alsatian and a border collie, were reported to have begun fighting. One owner stepped in and was bitten.
Manager Ben Atkins said signs were already up telling owners dogs must be on leads but that staff would now be actively enforcing the policy in light of what happened.
He said: “We will not be banning dogs, at the end of the day this has never been a problem.
“We will just be enforcing that everyone has to have their dogs on leads at all times.”
A witness, who asked not to be named, said: “The whole thing was really upsetting. One dog had the other by the throat on the floor and the owner of the smaller animal tried to break it up and got bitten on the leg.
“He ended up on the floor too. The Boat is such as great pub, I’ve never seen anything like that happen before.”
Staffordshire Police confirmed the attack had been reported to police and the force would be launching an investigation.
