200 new homes approved next to development site
An extra 200 new homes are set to be built next to a development site already under construction.
Lichfield District Council’s planning committee unanimously approved Miller Homes’ application for land next to the Roman Heights development off Burton Road, Streethay, at its meeting on Monday.
Helen Dawkins of Miller Homes, in support of the application, said: “The application site lies directly to the north west of the Streethay Strategic Development Area, forming an additional phase for 200 dwellings identified in the adopted Local Plan allocations document.
“It is viewed as a bolt-on to the wider Streethay Strategic Development Area, which is currently under construction with the build significantly progressed. It is hoped that this site would form a continuation of the build as a single phase, integrating well into the existing development.
“The site will provide a suitable mix of dwelling types, ranging from one to five beds. In addition 35 per cent of the dwellings – 70 in total – are to provide affordable homes.
“The main access to the site is through the Streethay Strategic Development Area, which has two access points off the existing adopted highway, Burton Road. Both are fully operational and linked by an internal loop road.”
The application had been recommended for approval by council planning officers ahead of Monday’s meeting.
A report to the planning committee said: “The application site is a 9.22 hectare (22.78 acre) parcel of green field land which lies directly adjacent to the northwest boundary of the Streethay Strategic Development Allocation site, currently under construction, and under the same ownership of the applicant, Miller Homes. The remaining surrounding area is currently open countryside.
“Based on the current indicative layout, open space provision within the site would provide approximately 3.1 hectares (7.66 acres) of green space, including an area of equipped play.
“The development will support the delivery of Lichfield District Council’s 2016-2020 Strategic Plan which recognises that a key issue for the district is the lack of affordable homes, especially for young people, and the delivery of affordable housing is a strategic priority in the theme of clean, green and welcoming places.”
