Children have been celebrating their birthdays with cake and balloons at school this year – as lockdown prevents them from having a proper party with their friends.

As the children can't have friends and family for their birthdays at the moment, Landywood Primary School, Great Wyrley, are organising class based birthday parties across school to celebrate all birthdays for children and staff. Landywood Primary School in Great Wyrley is throwing a birthday party a month to make sure all students can celebrate their special day.

The school's family support worker Vicky Altree had noticed the youngsters were missing out, so arranged a party afternoon on the last Friday of each month for every child in that bubble with a birthday that month.

The children plan the party in their glass to include a cake, snacks and games for everyone to enjoy.

Headteacher Andrew Clewer said: "Birthdays parties are an important part of growing up. Children and their families create memories through getting together with friends and celebrating. Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic it has been difficult for parents to organise these parties.

"Although the rules does not specifically ban get-togethers and celebrations, it does limit what can take place – for example, a children’s birthday party would only be able to have a limited number of guests depending on how many people are already in the household, and of course social distancing rules would have to be followed."

Mrs Altree added: "At this unprecedented time, it is great that we can help parents out by organising parties for the children to enjoy in the safety of their class bubbles."
