Revealed: Location of borehole drilling sites across Staffordshire as scientists seek climate change solutions
Data on where companies have been drilling deep into the earth at sites in Staffordshire in a search for energy and minerals, has been revealed.
An organisation called the North Sea Transition Authority (NTSA) has authorised the release of all the well data for onshore hydrocarbon boreholes across the UK that is held by the British Geological Survey.
It is understood to be historic data on where boreholes have been drilled before. One of the companies, oil explorer Shell has confirmed that its activities took place in the 1980s but nothing is happening there now.
The data shows sites including three in the Coalport/Sutton Maddock area, one at Codsall Wood, one between Newport and Stafford, four sites in a line close to the A41 between Newport, Market Drayton, and Whitchurch, and one at Prees.
There are also three sites close to the A539 between Overton and Ruabon, near Chirk.
Companies carrying out the research have also been named and include Evergeen, BP, Teredo Oils Limited, D'Arcy Exploration Co Ltd, Shell UK Exploration and Production.
