Man and dog die in Tipton house fire

A 79-year-old man and a dog have died after a fire at a bungalow in Tipton.

The man's body was found inside the house in Elizabeth Walk after the fire which was reported at 6.20am on Sunday (March 30). A dog also died in the fire.

The West Midlands Fire Service had earlier said the fire involved the ground floor and upper area of a dormer bungalow. Around 50 firefighters attended in total to get the blaze under control.

Police have cordoned off the area.

A statement from the fire service on Sunday evening said: "Further to our previous update about the severe house fire in Elizabeth Avenue, Tipton, we can now confirm that, very sadly, the body of a man, aged 79, was located inside the property by firefighters. A dog also died.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the man’s family, loved ones and all who have been affected by this terrible news.

"Investigations continue into how the fire started."
