Smethwick Swimming Centre, one of the oldest facilities in the borough, will close in August.

Councillor Richard Marshall, cabinet member for leisure, said the centre requires 'a lot of maintenance work'.

Sandwell Council is working with Sandwell Leisure Trust, SLT, to ensure minimal disruption for customers while work is carried out for three weeks from August 28.

Councillor Richard Marshall, Sandwell’s cabinet member for leisure, said the essential work was unfortunately unavoidable.

He said: “We take pride in the excellent range of sports facilities across the borough but with such an aging building it’s inevitable that regular work has to be carried out.

“Smethwick Leisure Centre is one of our oldest sports facilities and unfortunately requires lots of maintenance work.

"On this occasion the pools need to close for a few weeks however we will make sure the work is done quickly so our customers can get back to swimming at Smethwick as soon as possible.

“The good news is we have other excellent swimming facilities across Sandwell for people to use while the Smethwick pools are temporarily closed."

Smethwick Leisure Centre’s gym, dance studio, fitness classes and sauna steam facilities will remain open as usual while the work is being carried out.

Ash Rai, Chief Executive of SLT added: “We want to make sure there is minimal disruption of services to our customers and have arranged for additional swimming at Langley Swimming Centre so that customers can still access swimming facilities in Smethwick.

"We will also aim to re-locate as many swimming lessons as possible.

“The gym, dance studio, sauna and steam facilities will remain open throughout the maintenance period.”

Additional swimming sessions will be put on at nearby Langley Swimming Centre to accommodate Smethwick pool users while the work is carried out.
