Post mortem due on 20-year-old man found dead in street
A post mortem was due to take place today after a 20-year-old man was found dead in a street.
Police have launched a large-scale investigation after the man was discovered in George Avenue, Blackheath, just after midnight yesterday.
He had suffered 'injuries', police said yesterday, but officers were still trying to work out how he had died.
Officers were speaking to neighbours yesterday to try and gain clues to what happened and were also on the hunt for CCTV in the area.
The victim was discovered by a member of the public opposite Blackheath Coronation Social Club.
Several neighbours said they heard nothing to suggest there was an attack or altercation in the street.
The 20-year-old has yet to be named but police said his family had been informed.
Cordon
A police tent remained up behind a cordon yesterday afternoon.
A bouquet of flowers had been placed at the scene.
Hazel Fitch, aged 61, said: “A neighbour knocked on the door and said a body had been found. It’s terrible. We live just behind and we never heard anything.”
Kenneth Turton, 71, said: “They came hammering on the door about 2.20am. No-one knows the truth yet, not even the coppers. It’s a shame for the family.”
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “The police just said there had been a serious incident. It’s terrible what’s going on – it’s getting worse.”
Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, from West Midlands Police Force CID, said: “At this stage it is unclear how this man came to receive these injuries and we are working tirelessly to establish the tragic circumstances around his death.
“I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time and saw or heard anything suspicious to get in touch with me personally as soon as they can, quoting log number 46 of November 18.”
