"Lanes three and four remain closed whilst emergency services continue to work at scene. We're now reporting delays in excess of 90 minutes on approach to the incident."

National Highways later said delays had eased to around 60 minutes.

Writing to X, formerly Twitter, at 9.40am, it said: "Lanes one, two and three (of four) are now open on the M6 northbound between J7 (Great Barr) and J8 (M5).

"Final clear up works are ongoing, with lane four remaining closed to facilitate. There is approx. five miles of congestion on approach, causing 60 minute delays."

All lanes were reopened just before 12pm though around four miles of traffic remained on approach to the crash scene.
