Former West Midlands Labour MP revels in House of Lords honour and Labour landslide
A West Midlands political heavyweight had two reasons to celebrate on Thursday night as his party swept into power and he became set for a peerage.

Included in the 2024 Dissolution Peerages list, where party leaders nominated people to be accepted into the House of Lords, was Labour's former Warley MP John Spellar.
Mr Spellar's 42-year House of Commons career ended on May 30 when Parliament was dissolved ahead of the general election, but he is now set to move into the Lords alongside Harriet Harmon, Dame Margaret Beckett and Dame Margaret Hodge.
Mr Spellar arrived at the count for the Smethwick, West Bromwich and Tipton & Wednesbury seats on Thursday night, where he received messages of congratulations from friends, family and former colleagues.t.
Speaking to the Express & Star, he said: "I look forward to continue a lot of the political campaigns I've been running over the years, particularly backing British industry and getting Britain working and also working to support a Labour government.
