Medieval coins found near Oswestry are declared treasure
Five medieval coins and a coin fragment discovered with a metal detector near Oswestry have been declared treasure.
The silver groats were found within metres of each other in September 2013 by Marie Hunt, on land owned by Gareth Jones in the Llanyblodwel area.
Assistant coroner for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, Heath Westerman, said Helen Glenn from the British Museum had said the coins date back to the time of King Edward III, between 1351 and 1377.
He said: “Helen Glenn said they are very interesting little coins, they were discovered within a short distance of each other in a wet area.
“She says given the distance found they are consistent with a purse drop.
“They are a minimum of 10 per cent silver so would quality as treasure.
“I have no reason to doubt that evidence and therefore I will declare that the five medieval silver groats and fragment are treasure.”
The coins will be moved to Powysland Museum in Welshpool.
