The plan was revealed at a public meeting in All Saints Parish Church on Wednesday evening attended by around 150 local people.

It had been called over concerns that the village could lose the centre, which houses NHS services and Sedgley Library.

Kathy Jones, director of housing and communities for Dudley Council, who chaired the meeting announced that the council - also on behalf of health trusts - was now in negotiations with Aviva, which owns the building, over a potential new lease to the authority and the trusts that use it. They were moving ahead in a positive way.

She said there was a lot of space within it that was not utilised and the council was also exploring other options in the local area.

The centre was built through a private finance initiative and opened in 2001. The current 25-year lease ends in March.

"The first and preferred option is to keep the centre open," she said and added that the council was committed to maintaining library services in Sedgley. The aim was to offer services that provided "value for money."
