National Highways West Midlands has said that the M5 Frankley Services, between junctions 3 and 4, has been closed due to a "substantial" diesel spillage on a southbound slip road.

At about 7pm the fuel tank of a HGV car transporter ruptured as it was exiting the services, causing the spillage.

One lane of the M5 was closed due to the spillage and had only reopened just after 9pm, but no vehicles were able to leave the services.

National Highways also confirmed that specialist equipment was being called in to remove the fuel, with no word of when the services will reopen and whether the road will need to be resurfaced.

It also confirmed that there was work going on to release the cars and smaller vehicles from the services via another exit, but that no HGVs would be able to leave due to the sheer scale of the spillage.

A spokesman for National Highways West Midlands said: "Frankley Services on the M5 southbound between junction 3 for Birmingham and Halesowen and junction 4 for Bromsgrove and Stourbridge have been closed.

"This is due to a substantial diesel spillage on the slip road in to the services, which is preventing access.

"A lane on the M5 had been closed due to fears that cars leaving the services might have taken some of the diesel down the carriageway, but was reopened just after 9pm."
