One woman taken to hospital as firefighters battle through the night to get large Brierley Hill fire under control

Fire chiefs have said that they are continuing to monitor the scene of a fire that ripped through a scrap yard last night.

People were urged to avoid the Moor Street area as firefighters from five different fire stations helped tackle a huge blaze that started in a scrap yard.

The fire, which has since been doused, started at around 10.13pm last night (Monday, July 31), One woman was conveyed to Russells Hall Hospital by West Midlands Ambulance, but no other injuries were reported.

West Midlands Fire Service Tweeted: "There are currently four pumping fire appliances and one hydraulic platform in attendance on Moor Street in Brierley Hill dealing with a large fire. Please avoid this area if possible."

Thick black smoke from the blaze could be seen from miles away, with residents urged to stay away from the area while crews dealt with the incident.

One hydraulic platform and four pumping fire appliances were used on the scene by crews from Brierley Hill, Stourbridge, Haden Cross, Tipton, and Oldbury.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service, said: "Seven fire engines crewed by around 35 firefighters from Black Country and Birmingham fire stations attended. The first vehicle arrived within three minutes of being mobilised. An areal platform was also sent to the scene.

"This was a severe fire involving a large quantity of scrap in a yard. Access to Moor Street was limited for a period of time, but the road has now fully re-opened.

"One woman is believed to have been conveyed to Russells Hall Hospital by the ambulance service. There were no other causalities or injuries reported as a result of the fire.

"The fire was confirmed to be out shortly after 9.30am. Two fire engines remain at the scene damping down and checking for further hotspots. We will be conducting re-visits throughout the day."

West Midlands Ambulance Service has been approached for further comment.
