Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion after two old grenades were discovered during a house clearance in Brierley Hill.

The blast took place on playing fields at Brockmoor Community Centre following the discovery in nearby Corbyn's Hall Lane just before 1pm.

People were evacuated from their homes and a police presence remained in the area until cordons were lifted at 5pm.

Police say the other device was taken away to be examined.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "A controlled explosion took place after the discovery.

"People were evacuated in the area while this happened.

"The incident was dealt with fairly quickly and the cordon was lifted at 5pm."

The incident comes three months after a huge Second World War bomb was found next to the Aston Expressway in Birmingham.

That 550lb (250kg) shell was eventually exploded after 250 tonnes of sand were brought in to surround the bomb, while the Aston Expressway and M6 were both closed for more than 24 hours.
