£18.2 million Black Country leisure centre on track to open ahead of games
New images show the Dudley Leisure Centre building taking shape as the project is on track to open in early 2022.
The new £18.2 million facility is continuing to rise from the ground in Flood Street.
The new facility will include a 25-metre swimming pool, teaching pool, four-court sports hall, 100-station gym and fitness suite, exercise studios, soft play area and cafe.
Leisure centres in Stourbridge and Halesowen will also be refurbished as part of the council’s plans.
Earlier this month it was revealed the new leisure centre's swimming pool was in place, with construction crews filling the pool with water to test it over the last couple of weeks.
Attention is now turning to the sports hall, while it is hoped the roof will be completed early next year.
Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said: "It’s only been a couple of months since we were last on site, but it’s been amazing to see how much work has been done in that time.
"It is exciting to think the people of Dudley will soon have a first-class, state of the art leisure facility to enjoy."
Councillor Ian Kettle, Dudley Council's cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: "As residents will no doubt notice when they pass it, work is progressing nicely on the new leisure centre site."
Construction should have started in April 2019 but the project was delayed when planners were ordered to “enhance” the initial designs, with the new aim to have the facility built ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
