The damage was discovered this morning after the alert was raised by residents, and the disruption lasted several hours.

Emergency engineers traced the problem to a burst pipe in Alderdale Avenue, on the Sedgley-Wolverhampton border, affecting the water pressure in homes in the DY3 postal area including Himley, Swindon and Gospel End.

Severn Trent spokeswoman Sarah-Jayne O'Kane said: "We want to say sorry to anyone who lost their water supply. The pipe burst early in the morning and we got a team out to site as quickly as possible to do the repair, and they were able to fix the problem."
