20 mph speed limit on the way to Dudley town centre

It is one of a raft of measures designed to tackle congestion and improve safety in the 2026 Delivery Plan for Transport.

Improvements to Dudley Port Railway Station and the already-planned redevelopment of Dudley Bus Station are also included in the blueprint for the next decade.

The plan, which had been out for public consultation, has been approved by members of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

One of the proposals in the plan states: "Dudley Town Centre area wide 20 mph zone with supporting traffic management measures is incorporated within the Dudley Area Action Plan."

The action plan states: "The potential introduction of a 20mph zone covering the core of the town centre would assist in discouraging through traffic whilst at the same time providing the opportunity to create an improved and safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists."

Dudley Port Railway Station, which could serve as a Metro stop on the Brierley Hill to Wednesbury line, will be improved under the 2026 delivery plan.

There are also plans to improve bus journey time and road safety on the Wolverhampton Road and New Birmingham Road toward Dudley.

Councillor Steve Waltho, who represents the St Thomas ward close to the town centre, said: "I welcome the 20 mph speed limit proposal. We have big regeneration plans around the centre such as Cavendish House which will bring new footfall to the town.

"Anything to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians would be a good thing."

He added: "The measures proposed all seem well throughout.

"Dudley has often felt isolated from the main transport network, so anything to improve our connection will help our cause."

Councillor Roger Lawrence, lead member for transport for the WMCA, said: “The delivery plan maps out the way forward for transport in this region in delivering future prosperity."
