Funding appeal launched for landmark Dudley church
A funding appeal has been launched to help secure the future of a landmark Dudley church following a building inspection.
St John's Church, in Kate's Hill, reopened last summer following a 14-year campaign.
Campaigners say that they now need a around £1,500 for a full timber inspection to be carried out to prolong its future.
It follows an inspection by architect Stephen Oliver who is a buildings expert.
Mr Oliver carried out an inspection of St John's including the whole tower, the undercroft and recent emergency works.
Campaign chairperson Deb Brownlee said that the report can be used as the basis for future funding bids and appeals.
She explained: "We spent the day with architect Stephen Oliver, a highly experienced ecclesiastical buildings expert.
"He has carried out the fullest possible inspection of St John's including the whole tower, the undercroft and inspection of the emergency works we have had done.
"He commented that the roof strengthening work done in the upper vestry was a good repair.
"From this report we will know the schedule of restoration works needed, although some further investigation will be needed such as full timber inspection.
"We are appealing for donations towards the cost of this inspection, just under £1n500 which is very reasonable compared to other quotes.
"We can use the report as the basis for future funding bids and appeals."
Mr Oliver visited the church last week.
A 'Restoration Watch' project is also taking place so that visitors can see the building slowly improve and develop.
Mrs Brownlee continued: "In total Mr Oliver spent nine hours going round every inch of the building and it will take him several weeks to write the report which will itemise each area of the church.
"We are aware that a lot of issues will be highlighted, but this will be a current report - the last survey was 2008.
"Please bring or send donations to St John's Church Preservation Group, The Old School House, St John's Road, Dudley, DY2 7JT.
"We really need the assistance and every donation will be appreciated."
About 1,500 visitors have walked through the doors of the church since it re-opened this summer.
The Grade II-listed building was closed to the public in November 2002 after it was deemed to be unsafe.
But since it re-opened in August it has undergone several repairs impacting on its future potential.
