Erdington Court Bowls Club is in the running for awards  presented each year by Bowls England - the governing body for more than 2,000 flat green bowlers across England.

Bowls England's glittering event takes place in Leicester on February 22 and Erdington Court  is nominated for its work to improve diversity and inclusion in Erdington and the wider area.

Ray Woods, from Pype Hayes, has also been nominated for his work as an unsung hero.

The club has worked closely with Birmingham City Council and Witton Lodge Community Association since Covid  to improve its community links, and it has more than 150 members.

Club Chair Rob Robinson said: "We are all volunteers and it's hard but rewarding work!

"We depend on the skills and commitment of our members and the organisations we work with.

"We have been shortlisted before for awards, but have always been the bridesmaid and not the bride!

"We are hoping for better luck this time in our centenary year.

"Even being short listed is a tremendous achievement and a tribute to all the members who help out.

"One way or another, this is going to be another exciting year for us, with the competitive side of the Club not neglected and we have some stunning new modern uniforms on order.

"Our top teams and individuals continue to play at the highest levels regionally and city-wide. We welcome new members. Every voluntary organisation needs to renew itself, including our own."
