Fire crews called to tackle fire at tall city centre building

An area of Birmingham city centre was closed off on Friday evening after a fire broke out in a tall building.

West Midlands Fire Service put out a message on social media to say that fire crews were dealing with fire on Newhall Street, with around six crews being present at the scene.

The notice was put out at 7.05pm, and the fire was confirmed as out by 8.51pm.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "Our crews are currently dealing with a fire in a tall building on Newhall Street in Birmingham city centre.

"Please avoid the area.

"This fire, quickly extinguished by our crews, was on the eighth floor of a nine-storey block.

"It was contained to the room in which it started.

"There were no reported injuries.

"Our investigators are working to establish the cause."
