Arrest made after car stolen with six-year-old still inside

Officers from West Midlands Police attended an incident following reports of a car being stolen from Handsworth with a six-year-old child still inside.

Officers quickly found the vehicle abandoned a short distance away with the child still inside, with police arresting one of the suspected offenders who attempted to run from the scene.

The child was found to be unharmed and was reunited with their family.

West Midlands Police wrote on X: "We attended a report of a car being stolen from Handsworth with a 6-year-old child still on board.

"The car was quickly found abandoned with the child safely still inside and we then arrested one of the suspected offenders running from the scene."

The 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and was released on police bail while inquiries continue.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson: "A 20-year-old man was arrested after a car with a child inside was stolen in Birmingham on Sunday. We were called after a car was stolen in Island Road, Birmingham.

"The car was abandoned less than 15-minutes later at the junction of Brosil Avenue and Grestone Avenue. The owner's child was discovered sitting in the back.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and released on police bail while inquiries continue.

"The child was unharmed and has been re-united with their family."
