More than 60 firefighters tackling blaze at factory unit in Birmingham as properties evacuated
More than 60 firefighters are tackling a "severe" fire at a factory unit storing household goods in Birmingham.
West Midlands Fire Service sent 14 crews to tackle the blaze on New Summer Street, Hockley, at 7.30am today.
Nearby properties have been evacuated as firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, use four main jets to tackle the fire.
A spokesman for the service said: "Our high-volume pumping unit is also at the scene, along with a hydraulic platform.
"West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance are also on-site assisting our crews, with police closing some surrounding roads.
"Nearby properties have been evacuated. There are no reported casualties at this time.
"Those nearby, travelling or local residents or businesses, are advised to avoid the smoke plume where possible and close doors and windows."
Thick smoke could be seen from other areas of Birmingham billowing into the sky.
