The M42 near Birmingham Airport will be closed this weekend.

Major road closures are being put in place near Birmingham Airport, leading to potential delays in the surrounding area.

The M42 will be closed in both directions between junctions five at Solihull and and six, whch provides the main access to the airport.

The closures take effect from 9pm on Friday to 6am on Monday.

The M42 closure and diversion route as detailed by National Highways.

According to Birmingham Airport, the road will be shut due to roadworks and passengers should give themselves extra time to get to the airport, parked up and checked in well ahead of their flight time.

A spokesman for the airport has apologised to passengers but added: “National Highways West Midlands is making vital upgrades to M42 junction six to improve traffic movement on and off the A45.”

The work involves the ongoing improvements to junctions along the M6 in the West Midlands and follows ongoing work on at junction 10 at Wolverhampton, where overnight closures to surrounding roads are ongoing.

National Highways says bridge installation work will be carried out. Two new bridges weighing 2,050 tonnes are set to be moved into place over the M42 as part of the ongoing upgrade.

A spokesman added that the lane closures would be in place in both directions. A diversion route is being put in place, which will take traffic on the A41 and A45 between the two junctions
