Banging the drum about new cadet unit
West Midlands Police is drumming up support for a new cadet unit launching this year.
The new Cadet Corps of Drums will be a first for the force.
WMP is looking for musical maestros or marching masters to help them run the unit.
Drum corps are specialised marching drummers made up of people playing side drums, bass drums and bugles.
The cadet group will cater for up to 30 youngsters, aged 13 to 17, with varied musical experience.
It will be based in the gym at Chelmsley Wood Police Station which will be open as soon as experienced volunteers have been recruited to help run the unit as cadet leaders.
Superintendent Jack Hadley, who currently leads WMP’s brass band, has already offered to help co-ordinate the unit.
The team now needs a host of other volunteers with some expertise to join his team.
Liz Curran, WMP's cadet youth engagement officer, said: “We’re looking for people from all backgrounds who’d be interested in supporting this unique opportunity for young people.
"The team is looking to recruit specialists such as ex-military drummers, ex-military musicians, those with military or police drill backgrounds and anyone with a musical background.
"We’re also keen to hear from anyone who’d like to get involved who doesn’t have specific experience, but who is interested in learning. The more people we have the better."
The Cadets Corps of Drums of will meet one evening a week to start with and once trained will be encouraged to join local parades for major events, which may take place at weekends.
All the equipment is provided.
