The one-year-old boy was rushed to hospital with a head injury after falling from a window at a YMCA building in Erdington at around 7pm on Friday.

He remains in a serious condition, West Midlands Police said today.

The boy is understood to have fallen onto a narrow pathway between the building on Reservoir Road and the railway embankment behind.

Detectives are investigating and have urged anyone with information to get in touch.

The YMCA has two accommodation blocks at the site - the Orchard and the Vineyard.

The Orchard provides supported housing for 16 to 25-year-olds and has 82 flats while the Vineyard has 34 affordable flats for people who don't need support.

A spokesman for YMCA Heart of England said: "Our heart goes out to the little boy’s family and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

"We are working with the West Midlands Police and will be carrying out our own investigation internally so that we fully understand what has taken place.

"YMCA Heart of England takes health and safety extremely seriously and our residents’ safety and welfare is central to everything we do."
