Firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service are battling the blaze, which is believed to have started under the square's pavement involving electrical cables.

Video shot at the scene shows smoke billowing out of the ground, near to Supercuts and EAT.

A crew from Highgate headed to the scene at around 1.30pm.

Workers from Western Power and National Grid also attended.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "The fire is to do with the electrics below the pavement.

"A couple of roads were closed but have reopened."
