The TV hardman has visited the jail near Wolverhampton to hold talks about filming a show.

Prison bosses said they had not yet received an official approach from a production company to confirm plans for the documentary.

It comes ahead of Kemp's ITV show following West Midlands Police, which is to air on Thursday night.

The former EastEnders star, who has since gone on to forge a career as a respected presenter, is thought to be waiting for the green light from G4S, which runs the Featherstone prison, and then the final sign-off from the Ministry of Justice.

He was given a tour of the category C prison, which houses more than 2,000 inmates. It is believed his visit included the sex offenders' wing.

The star has fronted a number of hard-hitting documentaries, including Ross Kemp on Gangs and Extreme World, while has previously reported on life inside prisons, including Glasgow's notorious Barlinnie jail.

G4S confirmed Kemp had visited the prison but said there were no firm plans for a programme as yet.

Oakwood, which is among the largest prisons in the country, was labelled an 'impressive institution' following an inspection earlier this year as bosses were praised for improving standards at the jail.

Private security firm G4S was stripped of control of Birmingham Prison last month after an unannounced inspection uncovered widespread drug use, staff asleep on the job and allegations of bullying.
