Winter blast continues to chill West Midlands this weekend

Many concerts or sports fixtures have been cancelled over the weekend and travel has been widely disrupted – with more trouble on the cards.

Hundreds of schools remained closed today as drivers who did venture out faced huge snow drifts and icy roads.

Further snow was forecasted to fall across Wales, the Midlands and and central southern England this afternoon into tonight.

The Met Office says there could see a further 5-15 cm by this evening in some areas.

Forecasters have said there looks to be little respite from the cold until the middle of next week at the earliest.

The Mercury is not set to rise above 0C until Monday , when the Met Office has predicted a high of 4C and low of 1C.

The forecaster said: “Saturday will be cold, but with the winds a little lighter.

"It will be cloudy with outbreaks of sleet and snow easing through the day. Maximum temperature 0C.

"Things will stay cold into the new week with often cloudy skies and further rain, sleet and snow likely at times.

"Winds will become lighter, with further night frost and ice.”

Yellow warnings for snow remain in place for much of the region, while weather has also disrupted council services across the Midlands.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates said: “We are not out of the woods yet.

“There’s further snow to come, as well as a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain.”
