Britannia Fish Bar in Stafford is opening its doors to customers on Sundays throughout November to raise funds for Katherine House Hospice.

The hospice, which provides holistic and end-of-life care for people suffering with terminal illnesses and their families and carers, has been affected by lack of funds due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Britannia owner Charanjit Singh said the takeaway restaurant had always sponsored a local sports team, but had decided to sponsor a charity for the first time after hearing about the funding issues.

He said: “We have always sponsored a football team and this is the first time we’ve ever decided to do a charity sponsorship after hearing how Katherine House was struggling.

"We were thinking about opening up on Christmas day for homeless people to provide them with free meals, but this has come to light, so we’ll concentrate on this one for now.”

Mr Singh said he wanted to help Katherine House after seeing the work it was doing to help people and related it to the work Compton Care did in Wolverhampton where he lives.

He said the plan was to donate all the takings from the five Sundays, with £878 already raised from the first Sunday.
