Four more coronavirus deaths across Birmingham and Staffordshire

Four more coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in Birmingham and Staffordshire.

No new deaths were announced for hospitals across the Black Country, in data released by the NHS on Friday.

The latest figures take the total number of deaths in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire to 2,616. A further 704 people have died in the region's care homes after contracting coronavirus.

Two deaths were confirmed at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stafford's County Hospital, bringing the total there to 359.

And two deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Good Hope, Heartlands, and Solihull hospitals, taking the total number of coronavirus deaths at the trust to 1,008.

No new Covid-19 deaths were announced at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, where 289 people have died, the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, where 268 people have died, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, where 391 people have died, or the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, where 230 people have died.

The UK-wide death toll, which includes deaths in and out of hospital, increased by 66 to 42,268 on Friday.

NHS England announced a further 47 people had died from coronavirus in English hospitals, taking the total to 30,096.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 47 people, who tested positive for coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 30,096.

"Patients were aged between 51 and 97 years old. All except two (aged 59 and 92) had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from 26 September to 1 October 2020 with the majority being on or after 30 September.

"Their families have been informed."
