A Conservative MP says he has been "surprised" by criticism of the new rule of six imposed by the Government, insisting ministers are being led by the science.

The Government has faced a backlash from sections of the national media and other commentators over the latest coronavirus restrictions which have banned meetings of more than six people in an attempt to halt the rise in positive cases.

It has led to claims of a "nanny state" but Marco Longhi, MP for Dudley North, said ministers are the ones who have the responsibility of protecting the nation.

He said: "I was surprised at how angry some of the commentary was, I think it was completely out of proportion. It is politicians who have to bear the responsibility of the health of the nation on their shoulders, the difference between life and death and people losing their jobs. These are massive things the Government will not take lightly.

"It would be a brave politician to go against the advice of scientific advisors."

However John Spellar, Labour MP for Warley, which has some of the highest cases in the region, said he would like to have seen a more targeted approach, with measures focused on areas with high infection rates.
