One more coronavirus death confirmed in Birmingham

One more coronavirus death has been confirmed in the West Midlands.

The patient died at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust last Friday and their death was announced by the NHS today.

It means 2,566 people have now died in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire with confirmed or suspected Covid-19.

The first coronavirus death in Worcestershire for more than a month was also announced today after a patient died at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust last Wednesday.

Meanwhile the latest weekly figures from the Office for National Statistics show no new coronavirus deaths in care homes in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire, where 698 people have died after contracting the virus.

The UK-wide death toll released by the Government increased by 10 to 41,514 today.

Unlike the NHS, the Government now only includes people who died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus in the national death toll.

It comes as health chiefs in the West Midlands urge the public to remain vigilant regarding coronavirus as the infection rate continues to rise in Birmingham and Sandwell.

The latest death means 975 have people have now died at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation, which runs Queen Elizabeth Hospital and three other hospitals in Birmingham.

Elsewhere in the region 288 people have died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, and 230 people have died at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust which runs Walsall Manor.

A total of 264 Covid-19 patients have died at Russells Hall Hospital and 383 people have died at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals.

In Staffordshire 355 people have died at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust which runs the major hospitals in Stafford and Stoke.
