Data up to August 14 showed 83 new cases compared to the previous week when 73 people tested positive for the virus.

Figures collected by Sandwell Council show the two worst affected wards are St Paul’s and Soho and Victoria which saw 31 infections during the same period.

Dr Lisa McNally, director of public health said: “Sandwell still has a high number of coronavirus cases – so we need everyone to stay vigilant. Please ensure social distancing at all times and stay at home if you have Covid-19 symptoms. Book a test and self-isolate for 10 days. This can save lives.

“We have seen a number of outbreaks within households and extended families. So we are asking everyone in Sandwell not to have visitors in their home, except for essential visitors like carers.”

The rise comes after Sandwell suffered two outbreaks in workplaces last week including DPD’s major distribution hub in Oldbury where 19 workers tested positive for coronavirus.

Repeating pleas to companies where two or more staff report sick with Covid-19 to contact public health officers, Dr McNally added: “We are also seeing outbreaks in businesses. If you run a workplace, shop or pub, please ensure social distancing and hand washing. Shop customers must wear face coverings at all times.

“By working with businesses and being aware of where there are outbreaks, means that we are able to identify those who have contracted the virus and anyone they have come into close contact with.”
