More than £23,600 has been pledged to the One City Fund by generous residents and businesses since Tuesday. The original target was to reach £10,000, which would then be matched by the city council.

Officials in Wolverhampton have now urged people to carry on giving in order to raise as much as possible for families struggling during with the impact of lockdown.

Cash will then be distributed to those struggling the most during the pandemic.

The appeal was launched by the council in partnership with the Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council and a raft of city charities.

Council bosses say they have been blown away by the response of organisations and individuals in the city in supporting their own at a time of crisis.

The appeal was given a massive boost by several large donations of hundreds of even thousands of pounds.

Council leader Councillor Ian Brookfield

Council leader Ian Brookfield, said: ‘We’ve had a fantastic response to the One City Fund campaign, reaching the milestone is a testament to the generosity of businesses and residents of Wolverhampton.

"The city has as always come together to support each other, and this has never been more important than now when we are in the middle of this crisis.

“If you haven’t already, I would ask people to please donate whatever they can, it can be as little as £2 to whatever you can spare. Be assured that 100 per cent of the donations will be going to local foodbanks and charities, all working hard to make a difference to the lives of the most vulnerable residents in our city.”
