Two new wards to fight coronavirus at New Cross Hospital being built at rapid pace
Work is gathering pace on two new wards to help Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital cope with coronavirus.
Diggers are on the site of a former staff car park as work continues to rapidly create the wards, which are expected to be up and running next month.
The extra wards have been sanctioned as part of the fight against Covid-19, and to allow the hospital to increase its bed numbers.
More Covid-19 coverage:
Intensive care capacity has already been expanded, like at most other hospitals, to help provide urgent care for the most serious coronavirus cases.
Such measures have generally enabled hospitals in the Black Country to cope with the increased pressures of Covid-19. The opening of the Nightingale Hospital at Birmingham's NEC should also lift some of the burden.
Coronavirus deaths are continuing to rise by hundreds every day. More than 11,000 have now died in the UK. The West Midlands has seen the highest number of deaths outside London.
Wolves players and manager Nuno Espirito Santo have helped pay for the two new wards at New Cross.
It was announced last week that the first-team squad had agreed a six-figure donation to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross, as part of their willingness to support the city and its fight against Covid-19.
Some of the cash is being used to directly fund the new wards.
