Co-op latest supermarket to bring in distancing measures
The Co-op has joined other supermarkets in imposing strict social distancing measures at its stores.
Special markings will be introduced to encourage shoppers to remain at a safe distance from others, while workers will use every other till or checkout to keep people apart.
Customers will also be advised to pay by card where possible.
Similar measures have been announced by Tesco and Asda as the supermarket giants try to avoid coronavirus spreading in their stores as much as possible while remaining open to allow people to buy essentials.
Debbie Robinson, Central England Co-op chief executive, said: “Nothing is more important to us all at Central England Co-operative than the safety of our colleagues and customers.
“We’re closely following Government advice in our approach to social distancing and have now rolled out a range of new measures for our stores.
“We now ask all of our customers to co-operate with these measures to keep us all safe and allow us to continue to serve our communities.”
The Co-op has also introduced changes at its funeral homes amid the coronavirus crisis.
Public access to funeral homes has been restricted, but information has been displayed on how to contact the teams if needed.
A new service enabling families to complete funeral arrangements over the phone or via email has been set up.
The organisation said visiting loved ones is still allowed by appointment and providing social distancing guidance can be followed.
