Anti-high speed rail group Stop HS2 called for work on the controversial line, which will carve a path through Staffordshire, to be suspended during the current lockdown.

It comes amid continued confusion over whether construction teams will be expected to continue to work.

Stop HS2 has released videos appearing to show workers on the line in close proximity to each other, amid guidance on social distancing. Some construction workers have complained about being asked to continue to work while keeping apart, which they say it not possible.

Stop HS2 campaign manager Joe Rukin said: “All work on HS2 must stop immediately. We have all seen the footage of contractors crammed together in London, but the same thing is happening in the rural communities where HS2 preparation work continues unabated."

HS2 was finally given the go-ahead by Boris Johnson last month, following a review by the Government.
