The 'Queen of the Black Country' headed to Walsall where she was the star of the show at a Christmas lights switch on.

Internet, stage and film star Doreen Tipton brought a festive feel to Walsall Manor Hospital's sparkling event last night which brought some festive cheer to the patients at the hospital.

Doreen joined the Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Paul Bott, and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Chief Executive Richard Beeken to flick the switch before joining in with carols, accompanied by Walsall Brass Band.

She said: "The hospital will look bostin' this Yuletide and I hope I can blag a mince pie and a hot chocolate as the VIP guest."

People flocked to see Doreen light up the hospital.

She had the crowd in stitches as she regaled them with tales of her three labours – one of them requiring an 'Emergency Bavarian' to produce daughters Trojan, Tangerine and Trollop.

She said: “I was suffering with the condition cowardice and was in labour for seven weeks.

“Anyway, peace on earth and good riddance to all men. But seriously, thank you to all the wonderful staff here.”

The Mayor of Walsall also wished everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Richard Beeken, said: “Our first Festive Friday was made even more fantastic by the presence of royalty – the Queen of the Black Country, Doreen Tipton.

“She lit up the main atrium almost as much as the Christmas lights!”

The light-switch on was one of three festive events at the hospital which included a seasonal craft and gift fair alongside choirs and live singers who performed throughout the day.
