Hundreds of extra patients pile pressure on Sandwell Hospital

Sandwell Hospital is struggling to cope under the pressure after a huge increase in the number of people seeking treatment.

It has been revealed that about 300 more people are attending each week compared to last month.

Bosses say "spring pressure" is increasing the strain on the hospital and have urged people only to attend if they need to.

The hospital has been overwhelmed by a huge increase in patients during April at a time when pressure would normally be expected to ease following the end of the busy winter period.

Experts say people should ring the NHS non-emergency 111 helpline, if their condition is not serious, before going to A&E.

Toby Lewis, chief executive of the trust that runs Sandwell General, said last week the site was "astonishingly busy".

He added: "Really important that all of us all of the NHS' expertise, with 111 as a key gateway."

In a report to trust board members, Mr Lewis said: "That deterioration has continued through the month, with around 300 additional patients attending per week, and rises in admissions.

"At the same time our discharge profile has worsened, including some fall back in our over 21-day position. There continues to be issues of unplanned readmission as well. Our deterioration is reflected in that seen at other neighbouring trusts.

"Given what appears to be "spring pressure", we are revisiting our immediate Q1 (quarter one) bed plan, that for the summer, and firming up our plans for the winter, for which we have provided additional funding in our budget."

A plea was issued on social media by the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital Trust last week, which said: "Our emergency departments at Sandwell and City Hospitals are very busy.

"If you need medical help urgently you can call NHS 111 who can help direct you to the best place for your condition."
