No action on cows feared to be unwell at farm near Bridgnorth

The condition of a herd of cows near Bridgnorth that fuelled welfare concerns was not in breach of regulations, Shropshire Council says.

But recommendations will be implemented, the council added, following numerous complaints about unusually thin cows in a field near Chelmarsh.

The council launched an investigation earlier this month.

A council spokesman said: “The animal health team take all complaints about animal welfare seriously.

“Upon notification of this complaint visits have been made by the animal health team and with official veterinarians from the Animal and Plant Health Agency, part of Defra.

“We understand that the farm keeps older animals in the herd, and typically these animals will tend to appear thinner than younger stock.

“Whilst no non-compliances were found by the vets, some further recommendations have been made and the animal health team will continue to work alongside APHA vets.”

The RSPCA encourages members of the public who see any animals suffering to report it to its 24-hour cruelty telephone line - 0300 1234 999.

A spokesman said: "The RSPCA believes that the basic welfare of all animals must take into account five welfare needs. These needs are: somewhere suitable to live; a proper diet, including fresh water; the ability to express normal behaviour; for any need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals; protection from, and treatment of, illness and injury."
