Driver injured as car crashes on High Street

A high street was closed today after a car collided with a flower bed and bollard, injuring the driver.

The crash happened on Smethwick High Street at around 4.30am near Trinity Motors. A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a single vehicle had overturned.

"A man believed to be in his twenties was treated for serious head injuries. He was immobilised with use of a neck collar and spinal board before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

The High Street between the A457 Tollhouse Way and Piddock Road was sealed off this morning.
