Firefighter airlifted after alleged assault at Rugeley station

An internal investigation has been launched after a firefighter had to be airlifted to hospital with back injuries following an alleged assault at his station.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called out to Rugeley Fire Station to reports of an assault which saw a 50-year-old firefighter taken by air ambulance to University Hospital of North Staffordshire with back injuries.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue has now launched an internal investigation into the incident, which took place at the Bryans Lane station on Friday afternoon at just after 3pm.

Western Service Delivery Group Lead for Staffordshire Fire, Ian Sloss, said: "An incident occurred on Friday at Rugeley Fire Station and one member of staff was taken to hospital. They were discharged later that day.

"A full investigation into what occurred is now taking place."

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman Chris Kowalik was unable to provide details of the man's injuries, but confirmed several crews were called to the scene.

"West Midlands Ambulance Service can confirm it was called to Rugeley Fire Station shortly after 3.15pm on Friday, January 17," said Mr Kowalik.

"A rapid response vehicle, an ambulance crew and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire attended.

"A man was flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire."

Staffordshire Police press officer Hazel Dockery said: "An investigation is now underway following an alleged assault on a 50-year-old man at Rugeley Fire Station at around 3.15pm on Friday.

"The man sustained a back injury and was taken to UHNS. He was later discharged."
