An inquest was opened yesterday at Smethwick Coroner's Court, High Street, into the pensioner's death, which is continuing to be investigated by the police.

Coroner's officer Russell Williams said: "Mr Fenton was discovered lying in Beakes Road near Stanhope Road at about 9.30pm.

"He was thought to be the victim of a non-stop road traffic collision.

"Mr Fenton was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where life was pronounced extinct at 10.32pm with traumatic head injuries."

Black Country coroner Robin Balmain adjourned Mr Fenton's inquest to await reports coming from the police.
