35 firefighters battle Jewellery Quarter blaze
A fire ripped through abandoned buildings in the Black Country Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter today.
More than 35 firefighters were sent to the blaze at a four-storey building in Spencer Street, Hockley, near the border of Smethwick.
Flames quickly took hold throughout all floors and the roof of the property before spreading to an attached building and a neighbouring unit.
At its height eight fire engines and a hydraulic platform from stations across Birmingham and Sandwell were called to the fire at 5.01am.
Ambulance crews also attended but no casualties were found at the scene.
The majority of the fire has been brought under control but the fire service is warning motorists and commuters to avoid the local area while they continue to tackle the blaze and carry out checks on the structures.
