Police were called to the stretch of road near to the junction with Marshland Way in Bentley, Walsall at 1.40pm yesterday.

The road heading to Willenhall was closed and an air ambulance was called to the scene to airlift the man to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said the man is in a serious condition.

The ambulance service said the man suffered chest, leg and pelvic injuries.

It is not clear if the fall or a collision with a car had contributed to the injuries. West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said: "At 1.45pm the air ambulance from Cosford was conveyed to the Black Country Route in Bentley in Walsall.

"He was treated at the scene and airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

West Midlands Police spokesman Lee Page, said: "Officers were at the scene speaking to witnesses to establish what happened. We are not treating the incident as suspicious."

The road closure had an impact on the M6 with queues forming on the northbound carriageway near the slip road of junction 10. Traffic leaving Walsall was also affected with tailbacks affecting the junction with Bloxwich Road and Wolverhampton Road. Police reopened the route at 5.10pm.
