The man, believed to be in his early 20s, suffered severe injuries to his head and pelvis following the crash in Rathbone Road, Smethwick, just after 11pm yesterday.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Police and paramedics were called and the road was sealed off as crews treated the rider. Officers confirmed the man had come off the moped, landing beneath a car following the crash with another parked vehicle.

Fire crews used air bags to free him from beneath the vehicle so he could be treated by the trauma team.

Police are investigating the crash.
