The schools watchdog has been heavily criticised by the Headmaster of Thomas Telford School, Sir Kevin Satchwell, over the way an inspection of the school was carried out last December.

Ofsted found all aspects of the school to be 'outstanding', apart from leadership and management, which it graded 'good'.

As a result the school, which was previously inspected in 2009, and has been hailed as one of the country's most successful, will see its overall rating go from 'outstanding' to 'good'.

In a letter to Parents Sir Kevin said that a "contentious situation" emerged during the inspection regarding the way the school uses "codes to record attendance for behavioural issues".
