Academy trust scraps plan to axe jobs
An academy trust has scrapped its plan to axe caretaker and maintenance roles following a backlash from union leaders.
A number of roles were under threat at Ormiston Academies Trust, which runs seven secondary schools in the Black Country.
But the trust has confirmed it will not be going ahead with the planned restructuring programme following a consultation.
Unison had criticised the cost-cutting plan and claimed the proposals to let some caretakers and maintenance workers go could put the safety of pupils and staff at risk.
The workers are responsible for conducting fire safety checks and ensuring fire alarms and escape routes are up to standard. They also carry out regular building checks.
Ormiston runs George Salter Academy in West Bromwich, Sandwell Community Academy in Tividale, Forge Academy in Cradley Heath, Wodensborough Academy in Wednesbury, Shelfield Community Academy in Pelsall, Walsall, SWB Academy in Bilston and the NEW Academy in Fordhouses, Wolverhampton.
The academy chain said it would continue to operate without making the planned job cuts.
A spokesperson for the chain said: "We have been pleased with the level of engagement with the consultation we opened last month. We were always clear that we wanted to hear the views of all interested parties and that no decisions had been made. As a result, we have decided not to proceed with the proposals.
“As a well-run and financially responsible organisation privileged to serve 29,000 pupils, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, we will continue to invest in school improvement, teaching and learning, and our wider team, while being as efficient as ever.”
