Work adds up to top spot for Wolverhampton University maths team
Pioneering mathematicians at the University of Wolverhampton have hit the top spot for their world-class research.
Staff from the university have been ranked first in the globe for their work.
It is the second year running academics have been dubbed the best in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as Shanghai Ranking.
Mike Thelwall, Professor of Information Science, said: “We are very proud to be ranked as number one in the world for the second year running, which reflects the hard work and innovative research of our small but dedicated team.
“We use our mathematical skills to solve varied and interesting problems within information science.
"One day we are running a maths-driven lightshow on top of the Empire State Building and the next we are advising the United Nations on the online impact on their publications. The common factor is the mathematics of information.”
Members of the university's Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group - ran by professor Thelwall - were named top on the Library and Information Science category for the 'average scientific impact' of their research.
The ARWU, which is the world’s oldest university ranking system, is regarded as one of the most influential and widely observed university measures.
The university was also placed 19th in the world overall as part of a combined ranking - the highest in the UK.
Professor Thelwall, who is an internationally-renowned researcher in cybermetrics, has developed tools for gathering and analysing web data which he uses as part of his research into web phenomena.
